Pulse Check: Keeping Heart at the Core of Your Worklife

Written By: Sara Stone

Regardless of where you stand, this past month has been a lot; from the LA wildfires, plane crashes, workplace changes, and much, much more. So, the obvious question arises: How do we go on? How do we keep focused on work with what has been going on around us? Our suggestion: Lead with your heart.

Acknowledge the Heartbreak. You can’t lead with heart without first recognizing the pain within. This means opening yourself up to the hurt - both your own and that of others. Allyns Melendez often repeats her favorite quote, “Seek to understand before being understood.” At the core of the human experience is connection. In moments of hurt, strive to understand what your coworkers and employees are going through. Imagine how it feels to be truly heard and supported—now offer that same empathy to others.

Give Your Heart a Break. We all know the feeling of being overwhelmed when hardships pile up - when it rains, it pours. Give yourself permission to step away for the sake of your peace. This doesn’t mean ignoring what’s happening; it means taking the time you need to process. The fatigue of frequent turbulence is real, and it's okay to pause. No matter who you are - an employee, leadership team member, or the CEO/owner, take a little time to reset in order to be effective long-term. Remember to set others up for success in the process and properly hand off.

Have a Heart-to-Heart. It’s so easy to respond with a simple “I’m fine” when asked how you’re doing. But as you open your heart to others, allow yourself to lean on them as well. Try a more honest response like “It’s been a tough week, but I’m managing. How about you?” We’re all in this together, experiencing different fears, yet there is peace in solidarity. Small, authentic check-ins with your peers can help bring heart into your workplace. “Hey, I know things have been hectic lately.  How are you really doing?”

Make Room for Joy. In times like these, it’s easy to feel guilty for finding moments of happiness.  Joy is essential for change, survival, and rebuilding. Celebrate victories, big and small. Submitted that big project on time? Take a deep sigh and give yourself a moment to enjoy it.  Your team is in good spirits? Encourage it! Amplify this by creating opportunities for team bonding, and recognizing both individual and team achievements. When people are happy at work, they’re more productive and more likely to stay. Joy is contagious—let it flow!
